Elaine (as she was known) was born in Sumas on December 9, 1924 to parents Charles and Jessie Styles.
Mom was a telephone operator for several years before marrying Earl McPhail on March 19, 1950. They lived in Manitoba briefly, where their two older children were born and then returned to Sumas in late 1952.
Her hospitality, cooking, canning and gardening were enjoyed by all. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed her tea and toast routine. Friends and family never felt the need to call before popping in. The door was always open. She was quick to offer home remedies and fresh baked goods.
Backyard campfires, trips to Birch Bay, Mt. Baker and local day trips were some of the ways she enjoyed the great outdoors. She loved water fights and a good laugh. We will always remember the late night puzzles, board games and most of all her love for Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed but her memories and character traits will live on in each of us.
Services were held October 12, 2014 at Sumas Christian Reformed Church at 2:00 p.m. Dean McPhail read her Eulogy, followed by a special reading by Micah Hostynek. Herb Styles spoke on behalf of Elaine and the family. Elaine will be interred at the Sumas Cemetery.
