Major League Baseball Player. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound pitcher had a fine rookie season with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1932, but he's best known for winning 342 games, the most by any left-hander in minor-league history. He was with the A's in 1932 and 1933 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1934 to 1936. He had a 10-game winning streak when he was 12-5 with a 3.83 earned run average for the A's in 1932. He was just 6-12, 5-10 and 0-2 in his stay in Cincinnati. His five-year totals were 25-33 and a 4.48 ERA. The rubber-armed workhorse then had a remarkable run in the minor leagues. He pitched six years for Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League, winning 23, 24, 21, 20, 21 and 24 games. He pitched 332 innings in each of the 1939 and 1940 seasons and 300 more in 1941. He went into military service from 1943 to 1945. When he returned, he pitched eight more years in the minors. At the age of 45, in his last hurrah, he went 22-8 with Stockton of the California League in 1953. His minor-league totals were staggering. Eight times he was a 20-game winner. He worked in 4,905 innings in 736 games with 2,324 strikeouts and a 3.11 ERA. With his 342 victories came 238 losses.
