Daughter of Ira Harrison and Annie Louise Febrey Arnold, wife of James Samuel Garner.

MULLINS — Mary Elizabeth Garner, 81, of 301 Azalea Drive, Mullins, died Saturday, August 18, 2007, surrounded by her family after an illness in Marion County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at the Mullins Presbyterian Church Monday, August 20, at 2:00 p.m. with burial in Devotion Gardens.

Mrs. Garner was born in Washington, DC, July 10, 1926 to Harrison Arnold and Annie Louise Arnold. She was also predeceased by a brother, Col. Walter F. Arnold.

She graduated from Garfield Memorial School of Nursing and enjoyed a long career of over 50 years as a registered nurse. Before coming back to Mullins to work alongside her beloved husband of 59 years, Dr. James S. Garner III, Mary was an Army nurse on the islands of Guam and Saipan shortly after the second World War.

Mrs. Garner loved the outdoors and was a gifted and competitive athlete. She enjoyed bridge, golf, ping pong, gardening and collecting oriental pieces.

Mrs. Garner showed great love for her husband’s alma mater, The Citadel. While her son, James S. Garner IV, was a cadet, Mrs. Garner often entertained his friends in the corps, who lovingly referred to her as “Mama G”. “Mama G” seldom missed a Citadel football game, and was well known for her enthusiastic support of the Citadel Bulldogs.

Mrs. Garner was an active member of the Mullins Presbyterian Church and was involved in many aspects of the congregation’s life. Her lifelong love of music was demonstrated by her past involvement with the Mullins Presbyterian Church Choir. Her love of her church family was demonstrated by her desire to include them as Dr. and Mrs. Garner celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary by renewing their wedding vows before their church family, as a testimony of their Christian love and commitment to each other.

Surviving are her loving and devoted husband, Dr. James S. Garner III; a son, Dr. James S. (Arden) Garner IV of Mullins; a daughter, Frances Ann (Randy) Holmes of Ponce Inlet, Florida; 4 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
