He was decorated several times for valor including his actions in 1922 in the Knickerbocker tragedy - he worked some 24 hours straight and rescued many trapped customers. Having joined the FD in 1900, he made Lt. in 1909 and Captain in 1921. He was then placed in charge of 2 Engine in D.C.
