Mother: Martha M Gulley Chesnutt Jenkins Murphy (1872-1948)

Ollie May Chestnut was the daughter of William Chestnut (1870 – 1902) and Martha M Gulley (1873 – 1948). Her known siblings were: Bonnie Kate Chestnut (1894 – 1921); Albert Charles “Al” Chestnut (1898 – 1965), and Vivian Lee Chestnut (1900 – 1974).

When the 1900 census was taken Ollie was 4 years old, and her parents owned a farm that was mortgaged in Shawnee, Cherokee, Kansas. Her sister, Bonnie, and her brother Al were her playmates. Her brother Vivian Lee, who was known as simply Lee, was born later in the year, on August 12.

On Mar. 13, 1901, Ollie’s precious daddy was crushed, by falling boulders, in a horrible mining accident in the Badger Mining Company’s mine at Badger, Cherokee County, Kansas.

Ollie’s mother, Martha, returned to Saint Clair, Tennessee, where on June 15, she married Houston R Jenkins. In the 1910 census, it was disclosed that Ollie’s step-father owned a farm that was debt free, although he could not write or read, in rural Saint Clair where they were now living. Ollie and her siblings were enrolled in school.

Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, confirms that Ollie Chesnutt became the bride of Harley Hawkins in a wedding ceremony on June 20, 1913, in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Ollie and Harley’s marriage was solemnized by James R. Berry, Justice of the Peace.

Ollie and Harley Hawkins first child William Oral Hawkins made his appearance on May 18, 1914, in Bulls Gap, Hawkins County, Tennessee. They called him Oral, because his Grandpa, William F. Hawkins was referred to as “Bill Hawkins.” Sometime around 1916, they boarded the train in Bulls Gap and headed for Tulare, California, where Harley’s brother, Edward “Pete” Hawkins, and his sister, Myrtle Hawkins, were living.

The 1920 census revealed that Ollie and Harley were living on 611 So G Street in Tulare. Harley was working for a milk products company, and Ollie had given birth to Vivian Louise Hawkins, who was a 1 year and 9 month old.

In a few months Ollie became disenchanted with her marriage, and she and Harley went their separate ways.

When John Beck, a local Physician proposed marriage to Ollie, she accepted and they married in 1922. On Oct. 10, 1923, Ollie gave birth to a baby girl that they named Betty Jean. It is not exactly known when Ollie and John separated, or divorced.

About 1936, Ollie was living in Corcoran when she had a short-lived marriage to Oscar E Mitchell.

According to the publication, “Pioneers of Kings County,” Ollie May Mitchell passed away on Oct. 8, 1938, at the age of 43 years, 3 months and 24 days at a Hanford Sanitarium in Hanford, Kings County, California. Ollie’s Physician was R.W. Knight of Corcoran. He determined that the cause of her death was Cerebral Hemorrhage. Her body was taken to Russell and Scott Funeral Service to be prepared for burial. The Funeral service was on Oct 10, 1938, in the Chapel with Rev. J.S. Roberts of Corcoran officiating, with burial in the Tulare, Cemetery, Tulare, California.

Family and friends attending Ollie’s service, gathered at her gravesite to bid their beloved Ollie a fond farewell.
