A very sad shooting accident occurred last Saturday morning, whereby Mr. Halliburton Peck lost his life. Mr. Peck had loaded the shotgun and gone out to hunt for pheasant. He had only been gone a few minutes when two shots were heard followed by a shout, and when Mrs. Peak and other members of the family went out, Mr. Peck was found in a dying condition.

Apparently, Mr. Peck had stepped into a rut and slipped, and in the fall the gun was discharged, the full charge of both barrels entering the abdomen. The unfortunate man died before medical aid could be secured.

An inquest was held later when it was decided that the death was accidental.

Funeral services were held at the family residence on Monday afternoon. Rev. A.H. Priest and Rev. W. Robertson officiating. A very large gathering of friends was present to pay their last respects to one who was highly honored in the community.

Members of the A.F. & A.M. Lodge of which the deceased was a member attended in a body.

The funeral was held in New Westminster on Tuesday afternoon from the Masonic Temple, interment being made in the family plot at Fraser Cemetery.

The late Mr. Haliburton Peck was 60 years of age and a native of Hopewell, N.B. He had resided in Abbotsford about three years. He is survived by a widow and four children, two daughters, Mrs. Wright and Miss Eleanor Peck, and two sons, Lorne Peck, residing at home and Donald Peck, who is married and living in Vancouver. He also leaves two brothers, Col. “Cy” Peck of Sidney, V.I. and Mr. Gaius Peck of Sapperton, and one sister, Mrs. McDiarmid, to mourn their loss.

Mr. Haliburton Peck was very well known throughout B.C., having engaged at one time in the cannery business at Nanmu; and later was the owner of a sawmill at Georgetown.

He was the first vice-president of the Abbotsford and District Board of Trade and took a very active interest in all undertakings of benefit to the community.

Mrs. Peck and family have the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends in their bereavement.
