He was born on Feb. 17, 1925, in Chicora to the late James Edward Holben and Effie Syvilla Mohney.
He married Jean Frances Fergus on Dec. 8, 1945.
James was a chemical engineer in the Oil Field Division for the Calgon Corp., which later became part of Merck & Company, Inc.
He was a member of the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church and formerly a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair. He was active in his church throughout his life. He was an elder in the church.
He loved golf, having made three holes-in-one throughout his life.
James graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1942 and from Grove City College in 1949. After high school, he attended Slippery Rock State College for one year before entering the U.S. Army Air Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Holben of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care; his two daughters, Susan (Doug) Cormany of Pleasant Plain, Ohio, and Sara (Bob Schminkey) Holben of Chestertown, Md.; his two grandchildren, Justin (Kris) Cormany and Timothy (Alethea) Cormany; and his four great-grandchildren, Mason, Logan, Bentley and Weston.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, John and Dean Holben, and his four sisters, Grace, Pearl, Glendora and Twyla.
Holben - The friends of James Hubert Holben, who passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at theSmith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington.
Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Lisa Hackman of the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery, Slippery Rock.
