Robert the son of Robert E. Dorse and Wanda L. Dorse, the dear brother of sisters, Marsha, Louanne, and Yvonne all of Waterford Michigan enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 31 1968 in Detroit. He arrived in Vietnam on May 18 where he was assigned to and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of January the Battalions area of operations included the LIBERTY Bridge Combat Outpost and the security of LIBERTY Road to An Hoa.

On January 7, a truck from 11th Motors with Marines from Company G on board was approaching LIBERTY Bridge on the north side of the Song Thu Bon River when a command detonated mine exploded and AK-47 fire hit the vehicle by the enemy. Seven Marines were wound and Cpl Dorse was killed by the shrapnel wounds he sustained by the hostile explosive device.
