William Cashman was born in County Cork, Ireland to William Cashman and Mary (Leary) Cashman.

William left County Cork in 1840 and landed in Boston, where his brother John lived.
There, he worked on boats and in lumberyards. It was in Boston that he met and married Hannah Cashman.

Nine known children were born to Hannah and William, the first two were born in Massachusetts.

In 1849-1850, they migrated west to Wisconsin. William worked in Kaukauna on the Fox River Canal for about six years. Per his biographical sketch, it is said that at one time he could lift 1080 pounds!

While working on the canal, he invested and built a home on 40 acres in the Town of Rockland, Brown County. He was granted a homestead patent in August of 1852 and farmed this land for the remainder of his days.

To note, two of his brothers, John and Thomas also emigrated from county cork to Massachusetts and then on to Wisconsin. William's brother John was married to Julia Cashman, the sister of Hannah. His mother-in-law Ellen is listed on the family tombstone.
