Carl E. Spragg, MD, 85, of Primrose Retirement Community, formerly New Concord, died after a short illness on August 15, 2014, at Morrison House, Zanesville. He was born November 3, 1928, in Wheeling, W V, between the barn and the house, a son of the late John W. and Mabel L. Morgan Spragg.

He was a graduate of Muskingum College (1950) and received his MD degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine (1955). He served in the United States Army, stationed in Heilbron, Germany (where his 4th child was born). He was a family physician in New Concord from 1959 until he caught the Y2K bug in 2000 and retired after 41 years of practice. He was active and served as officers in the following medical associations: OSMA, AAFP, OAFP, Muskingum County Academy of Medicine, and Muskingum Valley Academy of Family Physicians. He was the physician at Muskingum College and director of their health services. Carl was also Muskingum County Health Commissioner.

Carl was a long time member and Elder of the College Drive Presbyterian Church in New Concord.

He is preceeded in death by his wife, Mary Katherine Spragg, whom he married March 15, 1952. Carl is survived by his children.

After retirement, Carl discovered a latent love of painting; he has several paintings showcased in both Gallery G, Zanesville, and Primrose Retirement Community. He was also father figure to a flock of rubber duckies that followed him around Primrose and brought many laughs to his fellow residents. He was a world traveler, amateur carpenter, recreational farmer, avid reader, ardent puzzler, and general jack-of-all-trades. He was loved by all and will be missed by many.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 18, at the College Drive Presbyterian Church, New Concord, with Rev. Anne Weirich officiating. The family will greet friends before and after the service. The service will be followed by a lunch in the Fellowship Hall at College Drive Church. Burial will be in New Concord Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the College Drive Presbyterian Church, 2 West High Street, New Concord, OH, 43762.
