John E. (sic)Hickman was born Sep 6, 1834, in Hamilton county, IN. When a boy, he removed with his parents to Iowa. He was married to Mary J Carr on Oct 26, 1856. To this union were born 8 children, two of who died in infancy. Those who survive are the Rev.T.J.Hickman of Elk City, OK; Frank of Dolores, CO; Mrs.Elzena Thomson of Squires, MO; Ira & Albert of College View, NE; and Mrs Lucinda Cunning of Aurora. With his family he moved to Butler Co, NE in 1877 and in 1878 moved to Hamilton Co, NE, where he has made his home the greater part of the time since. His wife died Apr 23, 1880. One year later he was married to Nancy J. McIntosh. To this union was born one child, Clark R. of Dolores, CO. There were also 3 step-sons: W. McIntosh of Seattle, WA(dec'd Nov 18, 1912) and Robert & John McIntosh of Hamilton Co, NE. His was a busy life, full of good works, always trying to lead others to a higher plane of living. While on his farm he preached in the community and also practiced medicine for a number of years. He labored in the ministerial association of the Christian churh of NE for several years. He has been quite feeble for about 6yrs and had to give up all active service. He was confined to his bed 5wks before his death. Though suffering much he was patient in his affliction. He fell asleep at 1pm Jul 26. 1913 at his home in Aurora, NE aged 78yrs 10mo, 20 days. Besides his faithful wife & children he leaves 3 brothes & 1 sister to mourn their loss. He has fought the good fight, he has finished his course, he has kept the faith & has gone to recieve the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to them who love his appearing. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Mon at 10am, Mr.T.B.Johnson reading the obituary & the scripture lesson. Interment at Richland Cemetery.
