Colonel Swords was a member of the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 30, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission near Ban Kok Nak, Khammouan Province, Laos, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
