Warrant Officer, First Class Dayton was a member of 281st Aviation Company, 10th Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade. On May 8, 1968, he was the aircraft commander of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1C) on a combat support mission 35 miles southwest of Da Nang, South Vietnam. The aircraft was turning when it experienced a midair explosion and plunged into the Buong River bank. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
