This memorial is a cenotaph as Corporal Katchak was buried on Wake Island. He was the first Marine of First Marine of First Marine Defense Battalion killed in the Battle of Wake Island. Originally buried on Wake Island; he was disinterred and reburied in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (aka Punchbowl Cemetery).
