Byzantine Emperor. He was the nephew of the Emperor Justin I. In 523, Justinian married Theodora, and they were crowned Emperor and Empress of the Byzantine Empire on August 4, 527. They had no children. During his long reign, he reconquered both Rome and North Africa, directed the compliation of the influential Corpus Iurius Civilis, and rebuilt the Hagia Sophia, which still stands in Istanbul. He was succeeded by Justin II.
