Marjorie Freida (McPhail) Burr, age 91 of Palisade died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born August 17, 1918 near St. Lawrence, South Dakota at the farm home of Fred and Bessie (Carr) McPhail. At the age of nine, she with her parents and Brother James moved near Alexandria, Mn. When she was a junior in high school, they moved to Esquagama Lake north of Aitkin. She graduated from the Aitkin High School in 1936. She then attended the Crosby-Ironton Teachers Training Dept. and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Aitkin County for 36 years. She started out in one room school houses, and later moved to the Palisade School, then to Aitkin and Rippleside schools and then back to Palisade where she retired in 1981. She had received her Bachelors degree from UMD in 1969. She married Harlan Ellsworth Burr on October 7, 1938 in St. Paul, Mn. They lived east of Palisade for about two years and then in December of 1940 moved south of Palisade and developed a homestead. She was a member of the Aitkin Seventh Day Adventist Church where she served as church organist for 50 years along with other church offices. She and her husband had been members of Marantha Volunteers International. They traveled to other countries and in the USA building churches, schools and orphanages. She is survived by 2 daughters and sons in law: Marliss and John Reagan of Azel, Texas; Beverly and Stephen Rawls of McGregor, Mn.; three grandchildren: Gregory and Joni Sanford of Two Harbors, Mn.; Douglas and Joann Sanford of Charleston, S.C.; Cheryl Cothern of Billings, Mont.; 8 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren, 16 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harlan in 1988 and brother James McPhail. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 31, 2010 at 11 AM from the Aitkin Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Eugene Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Fleming Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 PM at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
