Born Allen Stevens Ripley, his father Walter Ripley was briefly a Major League pitcher, Allen attended North Attleboro High School in Massachusetts, prior to being signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1972. He marked his Major League debut with Boston on April 10, 1978 and pitched in 15 games that season. After he was acquired by the Giants in 1980, he produced a career-high 9 wins during that season as a member of San Francisco's starting rotation. In 101 regular season games, he compiled a 23 win, 27 loss record with a 4.52 lifetime ERA in 463 innings pitched.
