US Congresswoman. A member of the Republican Party, she served the State of New Jersey's 7th (1981 to 1983) and 5th Congressional Districts (1983 to 2003) in the United States House of Representatives. Her father was an automobile mechanic, she attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from Montclair State College in 1951. After marrying and raising her family, she experienced her first time as a public servant, when she served on the Board of Education in Ridgewood, New Jersey. During her tenure in Congress, she proved to be bipartisan on several issues including gun control and abortion rights. She fought hard with the Clinton Administration to enact the landmark Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. After leaving Washington, she returned to New Jersey and served on several nonprofit organization boards which benefited children. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
