Commander Dion was a member of Photo Reconnaissance Heavy Attack Squadron 12, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On August 17, 1967, he was flying in a North American Vigilante Fighter (RA-5C) over the Gulf of Tonkin about 75 miles from Nghe An, North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed into the sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
