Almira was the daughter of Samuel Collins and his wife, Almira Howard. She died of breast cancer after two years of fighting it with any remedies she could find. After leaving New York Almi sent many letters to her cousin, Emily, "back home." Among them she describes how "Horse disease" has taken it's toll in Chicago about a year after the "terrible fire." For a while she ran a large boarding house in Chicago, but sold it so that she could keep "boarders on a smaller scale, but get better pay and do not have so much care or have to work so hard." In early 1875 she wrote that she no longer kept boarders, but rented out furnished rooms. In November 1878 she describes what she is going through with breast cancer and it is the last letter written to her cousin.
