THE KAREN'S PLACE STORY FROM THE KARENS PLACE BROCHURE:
On April 21, 2004, Raymond and Bernadine Byrd lost their daughter Karen to drug addiction. She lost her life in Huntington, West Virginia in a drug deal gone bad shot by a 14-year old drug dealer. They went before the court and asked the court for mercy for the young man who killed their daughter. Because of their courage, forgiveness and Christian character, the judge granted Karen's killer leniency and later in life he'll be eligible for parole. They handed the teenager who took their daughter's life a Bible directing him to hope for his future even as he spends the net several decades of his life behind bars.
Out of their loss has come a passion to help other parents find hope for their children. Almost five years ago, the Byrds helped start a faith-based program through the court system called SAVE that ministered to over 300 individuals struggling with drug addiction. Their work with the SAVE program lead them to join with other interested community activists to start Odyssey, a 501 (c)3 charitable organization with a mission to develop programs & Strategies for those with life controlling issues. Odyssey opened an addictions resource center in February of 2010 in Louisa, Kentucky and the center continually places individuals into long-term Christian recovery centers.
Odyssey has a large lodge that was formerly a bed and breakfast at Yatesville Lake in Lawrence County. It is located 40 minutes from Ashland, Kentucky, 60 minutes from Pikeville, Kentucky and 45 minutes from Huntington, West Virginia. The facility will be an adult center to house 20 women for Christian, residential recovery. This center will be named Karen's Place in memory of Karen Byrd and in honor of the work Raymond and Bernadine Byrd have done on behalf of other parents who have children with substance abuse problems. Karen's Place is accredited by Teen Challenge who has over 200 centers nationally and 800 centers internationally.
