Author and Publisher. He graduated from Williams College in 1958, and did post-graduate work at Yale Divinity School and New York University. Montgomery began his career with the Wall Street Journal, visiting schools to encourage teachers to use the Journal in classroom instruction. For two years he was an Assistant Dean at Columbia University, and in 1966 he founded Vermont's Waitsfield Summer School, which provided instruction for children with learning disabilities. In 1975 he was a founder of Vermont Crossroads Press, which published Ed Packard’s "Sugarcane Island" as the first in a series called "The Adventures of You." Montgomery wrote a follow up, "Journey Under the Sea,” and then continued "Adventures of You" under the name "Choose Your Own Adventure." This series, which enables readers to interact with the story, was designed to attract "reluctant readers," and became the world's fourth bestselling children’s book series, with 184 titles, many by Montgomery and his sons, and over 250 million copies sold between 1979 and 1998, with CD and online versions available after 1990. The "Choose Your Own Adventure" series has been used to teach reading skills, and since 2000 several titles have been modified for use on portable electronic devices.
