Elected to New York State Assembly, 1868. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State 1869-1871; 1873-1874; 1881-1882, Minister to Germany 1874-1877, U.S. Supreme Court Reporter of Decisions 1883-1902. Died in Washington, D.C.
