Known as Bancroft Davis. Son of John Davis, Whig governor of Massachusetts, and Eliza Bancroft. He married, 19 Nov 1857, Frederica Gore King, daughter of James Gore King and Sarah Rogers Gracie. He was a lawyer, politician, diplomat and correspondent.Politician, lawyer, diplomat, journalist, son of Massachusetts Governor John Davis, brother of California congressman Horace Davis. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard University with Bachelor of Arts degree. Appointed secretary and chargé d'affaires of the American Embassy, London, England, 1849. Elected to New York State Assembly, 1868. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State 1869-1871; 1873-1874; 1881-1882, Minister to Germany 1874-1877, U.S. Supreme Court Reporter of Decisions 1883-1902. Died in Washington, D.C.
