He spent 29 years serving his country; he had two tours each in the Korean War and Vietnam War and was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal. He was a bailiff for the City of Hampton following his military retirement.
He loved going for ice cream at Dairy Queen, watching "Gunsmoke" in his recliner and eating bologna sandwiches and hot dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Cindy Byrd and husband Donnie of Florida, Douglas and wife Carol of Florida, Raymond of Newport News, Todd and wife Alisa of Alaska and Tina Rector of Newport News; a stepson Alan W. Smith and wife Rhonda of Spotsylvania County; his siblings, Raymond Rector and Carolyn Richardson, both of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Charlene Rector of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Linda, Scott, James, Spruce and Tahje; and his beloved cat, BooBoo.
Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
