John was the son of James Burns and Maria McClain. He immigrated to the United States and about 1870 he married Elizabeth Peak. According to the 1900 Census they had ten children including Robert, Rose, Leo, Bruno, Bessie and Mary. John died of fatty degeneration of the heart at the age of 68.
