German Military Officer. He first joined the German army in March of 1914. He received several injuries in fighting in World War I, at Cutry-Ugny and St. André. With transfers and promotions, he was Company Leader of the 156th Infantry Regiment after the end of the war. He held various positions in the Higher Police School in the 1920s, returning to military service in 1933, serving in positions in transport and tank schools. At the outbreak of World War II, he served as Commander of the 50th Antitank Battalion. He then commanded the 10th Rifle Regiment, the 10th Panzer Grenadier Division, and finally the 15th Panzer Division. He was captured with the 15th Panzer Division as part of the Afrikakorps surrender, May 13, 1943. He was held as a prisoner of war until his death from injuries in an automobile accident in Mississippi. He was highly decorated, receiving medals in both World Wars, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. He is the highest ranking German POW buried at Fort Benning Post Cemetery.
