A resident of Cathedral City, Calif., Roy passed away peacefully Nov. 14 2014, at home surrounded by family. Born Jan. 21, 1925, in Duluth, Minn., to John and Hulda Hoglund, he had four brothers, Ragner, Carl, Bertil and Gilbert, and a sister, Dorothy, all deceased. Raised in Duluth, Roy attended Central High School and joined the U.S. Merchant Marines soon after his 17th birthday, serving in North Africa and then Italy during the invasions of Sicily and Salerno. In March of 1945, Roy married his wife of nearly 70 years, Jean, and had four children. He retired in 1983 from Portland Public Schools as glazier foreman, after a career of 32 years. Always active in retirement, Roy enjoyed golf, then walking every day in later years. Roy was well-known and admired for his artistry in woodworking and stained glass. Many examples remain and have been gifted to family and friends. Universally well loved by all, Roy is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, Timothy (Kathleen), Gilbert (Michelle) and Casey; daughter, Jacqueline Brown (Mark); cherished nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at Zeller Chapel of the Roses with a private burial in Willamette National Cemetery.
