He was 13-12 with a 3.45 earned run average in 1939 with nine complete games in 24 starts and two shutouts. He pitched three hitless innings in Game 3 of the World Series against New York, but the Yankees pulled a four-game sweep. He had an 8-8 record and 3.63 ERA in 1940 and appeared in three games in the Fall Classic as the Reds beat the Detroit Tigers in seven games. He pitched in relief in Games 1, 3 and 5, all losses, totaling 8 1/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs, walked six and struck out seven. He finished his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1942. His lifetime ledger was 30-29 with a 3.75 ERA and 18 complete games in 60 starts.
