Graveside services for retired Navy Cmdr. Louis C. Gunn, 75, of El Cajon, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Greenwood Memorial Park. El Cajon Mortuary is in charge. He died Friday in a hospital. Cmdr. Gunn was born in Tennessee, was a resident of the county for 60 years, served in the Navy 29 years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After retiring from the service in 1959, he worked as an Indian-affairs expert for the county.
A graduate of San Diego State, Cmdr. Gunn held degrees in history and political science and was a member of Phi Sigma Alpha, an honorary political-science fraternity. He was an honorary member of the Kumeyaay Indian Tribal Council and a member of Masonic Lodge 696. Survivors include his wife, Ardis; four sons, Louis, of Anaheim, Fred and Frank, both of El Cajon, and Tom, of Los Angeles; three daughters, Beverly Holle of San Diego, Elenore Watts of Virginia and Deborah Small of Hawaii; two sisters , Louise Etheridge and Viola Bozeman, both of Tennessee; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Deceased Name: Louis C. Gunn Sr.
Retired U.S. Navy Commander Louis C. Gunn Sr. died Friday at Kaiser Hospital of natural causes. After almost 30 years in the Navy he worked on Indian affairs for San Diego County for 10 years and was made an honorary member of the Kumeyaay Tribe. He was 76. Born in Tennessee, he joined the Navy as an enlisted man in 1929 and retired in 1958 as a lieutenant commander with numerous decorations for World War II and the Korean conflict.
He earned a bachelor's degree in history and social science and an M.A. in political science at SDSU.
In the San Diego County administration he worked with tribal councils and state and national legislators on issues affecting the Indians. He was a member of the Crossroads Lodge of the Masonic Order. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Park, including a Masonic ceremony, full military honors and a prayer by the Indian Tribal Council.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ardis I. Gunn of El Cajon; four sons, Lewis C. Jr., Frederick and Francis L. of San Diego, and Theodore L. of Los Angeles; three daughters, Beverly L. Holle of San Diego, Eleanor Watts of West Virginia and Deborah Ann Small of Hawaii; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola Bozeman and Louise Etheridge of Tennessee.
