Roman Catholic Cardinal. Assisi born Gabriele della Genga Sermattei was the nephew of Pope Leo XII. The son of Count Filippo della Genga, of the branch of the family that in 1793 transferred itself to Assisi, he received his education at the Jesuit College of Orvieto, obtaining a doctorate in utroque iuris in both civil and canon laws. Ordained priest on September 26, 1830, he was soon named domestic prelate of His Holiness, relator of the Sacra Consulta and canon of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Berito, he received his episcopal consecration on September 15, 1833 from Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca in Rome. Named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on June 13, 1834, ten days later he was promoted to the archbishopric see of Ferrara. Pope Gregory XVI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 1, 1836 with the title of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni, becoming thus the only nephew of a Pope to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals in the nineteenth century. Resigned the pastoral government of his archbishopric see on January 13, 1843, he was appointed apostolic legate in the provinces of Urbino and Pisa six days later. Head of the group of three Cardinals that governed Rome during the Pope's absence in Gaeta between July 1849 to April 1850, the other two being Luigi Vannicelli Casoni and Lodovico Altieri, he was named prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Religious on April 14, 1852 and prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Religious Discipline on March 12, 1856. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals between March 15, 1858 and 1859, he was furthermore named secretary of Apostolic Briefs on October 13, 1860, grand chancellor of the Pontifical Equestrian Orders and protector of the Conventual and Capuchin Orders. The Cardinal passed away in Rome following a severe stroke and was laid to rest, in accordance with his wishes, inside the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina. Pope Pius IX was among those who participated in his funeral.
