Mary Ellen Bigler went home to be with Jesus, surrounded by her family, on November 22, 2014 in Salem, Oregon. She was born in Havannah, Kansas on November 21, 1925 to James and Lucy Wheeler. She grew up in Idaho as the oldest of six children, and graduated as valedictorian from Melba High School in 1943. She married Albert E. Bigler on May 4, 1947, and they had two children. With a full plate as a dedicated wife and mother, Mary Ellen returned to school. She graduated from Columbia Basin College in 1965 as a Registered Nurse, a profession she served in for nearly 40 years. She and Albert lived in Seattle, Hermiston, and The Dalles, before settling in Salem in 1972.

Mary Ellen loved caring for her garden and her dogs, and loved her family most. Her life was filled with service and generosity to others, especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother Ralph Wheeler. She is survived by her son Duane Bigler; daughter Karen Fields; brother Don Wheeler; sisters Esther Vistenzo, Virginia Johnson, and Etta Hunter; granddaughters Amber (Adam) Stutzman, and Kelly (Casey) Lute; and eleven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Friday, November 28 at Bethany Baptist Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers please donate to the account set up in Karen Fields' name for children Mary Ellen sponsored through Compassion International at MAPS Credit Union, 307 E Main St, Silverton, OR 97381. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
