Merle Laverne Solland, age 86, died at Salmon Creek Legacy Hospital in Vancouver, Washington, on Friday December 5, 2014. He died of natural causes.

Born April 22, 1928, in Vancouver, Washington, he lived in Vancouver his entire life. He was machinist foreman at Bonneville Power Administration.

He was a world wide record holder of inboard hydroplane racing. He was a master builder and craftsman of the sport. He was a great driver and won hundreds of trophies and awards.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Solland of 59 years. Family includes: oldest son, Dan Solland, daughter, Mindy Swindells, and youngest son, Kurt Solland.

A service was held Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Relatives and friends were welcome at the service.
