Dorothy was born to Ben Butz and Frieda Getz at her grandparents’ dairy farm. She became a devoted child of God when baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton on October 30, 1932, and was confirmed at Zion on March 25, 1945. Throughout her life, she attended Grace Lutheran Church in Hudson and Trinity Lutheran Church in Greeley. She began school at Denver Public Schools and 4-Way School in Ione before transferring to Zion Lutheran School in Brighton, where she attended third through eighth grades. She graduated from Brighton High School with the class of 1949 then attended Central Business College in Denver. After doing bookkeeping for the family farm business, she worked at Henrylyn Irrigation District. She met the love of her life, Kenneth Virgil Gettman, in 1947 while working at the Rex Theatre in Brighton. After being married on December 6, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church, they moved to Othello, WA, where Ken was stationed in the Air Force. They returned to Colorado in 1955, where they fastidiously ran their farm business for many years. She also taught Sunday school, sang in church choirs, served as a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Rancherettes Extension Homemakers, and was a Brownie leader and a 4-H leader. Survivors included: daughters Kim (Sonny) Swarts, Paula (Ken) Mickiewicz, and Julie Alexander; grandchildren Brandy (Tom) Ishida, Lisa Swarts, Matt Swarts, Brianna Harlow, Chance Harlow, Cheyann Hein, Tyler Hein, Brek Ishida, Justus Durham, and Matison Swarts; siblings Richard Butz, Ken Butz, Margie Campbell and Sandra Hammett. Funeral services held December 13 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1400 Skeel St., Brighton. Interment service held December 15. Memorial gifts made to Zion Lutheran School, 1400 Skeel St., Brighton 80601 and Trinity Lutheran School, 3000 35th Ave., Greeley 80634. Tabor-Rice Funeral Home handled arrangements.
