Swedish Author, Ethnographer, Explorer. He first made his name as stewart aboard the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947. He was a sociologist interested in human migration theory, and he was also the only Spanish-speaking member of the crew. Most of his life he lived in Raroia, Tahiti in Polynesia, and wrote several books about this part of the world, among them a six-volume history of the Polynesian islands. He was very much engaged in environmental struggle and faught against the nuclear tests in the South Sea area. Along with his wife, Marie-Therese, he received the 1991 Right Livelihood Award - the "Alternative Nobel Prize" - for the achievements in this work. Among many travel books, he also wrote the fiction novel "Villervalle i Söderhavet" (Villervalle in the South Sea, 1963), a story for young people about a Swedish family moving to Tahiti and their adventures. This book was filmed for the Swedish television and became a popular TV-series.
