Ira was the youngest child and only son of James Stanley Emery and Mary Rice Emery. Ira was about 14 years old when he died.
His father, James, died June 8, 1898. James was a member of the Leavenworth, Kansas constitutional convention and served on the Kansas Legislature in 1862 and 1863. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him U.S. District Attorney for Kansas in 1864. In 1891 he was president of the Kansas State Historical Society.
