William H.H. Hoover, veteran of the civil war, and one of the oldest residents of the District, died last night at his residence, 3656 Park place northwest, after an illness of about sixteen months.

Mr. Hoover was born in Washington, November 19, 1840. At the outbreak of the civil war, he was among the first to volunteer his services in the Washington light infantry. He served with distinction throughout the conflict.

After the war he entered the butcher business. Later he entered the tax office, where he remained until twenty-eight years ago, when he became an inspector in the District Health Department. In August 1920, he retired on account of failing health.

Mr. Hoover was a member of the Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia, New Jerusalem Lodge, F.A.A.M.; the Old Guard of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the United Brethren Church at North Capitol and R streets.

Five sons survive Mr. Hoover. They Are William H., Charles M., Frank P., George F. and Eugene P. Hoover. Mr. Hoover's wife died in 1915.

While arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed, services are expected to be held Friday afternoon. Interment will be with full military and Masonic honors in Rock Creek Cemetery.
