Painter. A native of San Francisco, Klumpke was handicapped at a young age after being injured in two separate falls. In 1877 she moved with her family to Paris, where she studied at the Académie Julian art school. She presented her first painting publicly at the 1884 Paris Salon, which won the Grand Prize. Soon afterward she struck up a strong friendship with French painter Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, better known as Rosa Bonheur, and they would eventually live together in France. With Bonheur's death in 1899, Klumpke oversaw the sale of her estate and in 1908 she published a biography of Bonheur. Klumpke returned to San Francisco where she published her own autobiography, "Memoirs of an Artist," in 1940. Of all her paintings, she is best remembered for her portraits of Rosa Bonheur and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
