John E. Manuel was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, Feb. 4, 1842, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alta Nuzman, in Soldier, Kansas, September 30, 1919, at the age of 77 years, 7 months, and 26 days. Mr. Manuel was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in company I, 13th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry. He came with his parents to Doniphan county, Kansas, in 1855, where they settled near Wathena. It was there that he united in marriage to Jane Hill, on April 17, 1878, to which union were born three children, Lizzie Manuel, deceased; Alta Nuzman, of Soldier; and Elbert Manuel, of Holton. during the year 1885 the family moved to Jackson county, locating three miles northwest of Holton. Kansas, where he resided the remainder of his life, except during the last few weeks of his illness, which were spent at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nuzman, in Soldier. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Alta Nuzman, of Soldier, and Elbert Manuel of Holton; two grandchildren, Loren and Jane Evelyn Nuzman; two brothers, Thomas Manuel, of Alhambred, Calif.; James Manuel, of Ashley, Montana. His wife preceded him to her eternal home June 8th of the same year. The members of the G.A.R. then took charge of the body and the remains were placed to rest in the Holton Cemetery by the side of his life's companion, who so recently passed away.
