Corporal John William Herdman, born 2 Mar 1885, was the son of Robert Scott Herdman and Sarah "Sadie" J (Miller) Herdman of Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
In the 1900 census 15-year-old John is living with his parents and sister Estella 17, at 531 Bedford Street in Dale, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Dale is just southeast of Johnstown, 69 miles due east of Pittsburgh. His father is a laborer in a rolling mill.
John married Mary Kirchner 17 Nov 1903 in Ebensberg, Cambria County, PA. Ebensberg is 18 mi NE of Johnstown.
In the 1910 census 25-year-old John and 24-year-old Mary are living with children Mary 6, and John F "Frank" 4, at 224 Wood Street in Johnstown. John is a laborer for a carpet cleaning company.
John was assigned to Company B of the 7th Infantry Regiment attached to the 3rd Division. John sailed for France with Company B of the 7th Infantry Regiment from Hoboken, New Jersey, aboard the USS America on 6 Apr 1918. His person to contact in case of emergency was his father, R. Herdman at 235 Wood Street in Johnstown.
On 15 Jul 1918 the 3rd Division had been pushed back south of the Marne River to Fossoy, 4.3 miles due east of Chateau Thierry.
Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 3, Pennsylvania, show Corporals: Herdman, John W, from Johnstown as killed in action 15 Jul 1918.
Sadie and Mary are listed with the 1929 Gold Star Mothers and Widows invited to visit their son's and husband's grave in France as guests of the US Government during 1930. Mary accepted the invitation. Sadie's response is listed as Unknown.
In 1934 Mary, still living at 224 Wood Street in Johnstown, applied for Pennsylvania Veteran's Compensation and was awarded $10 per month for 20 months for a total of $200.
Mary never remarried. In 1920 she was still living with Mary and Frank at 224 Wood Street. In 1930 she was still living at 224 Wood Street with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Maurice Lambert. She passed away 21 Jul 1956 and is buried at the Grandview Cemetery in Southmont, Cambria County. A cenotaph in memory of John was added to Mary's headstone.
