Herbert G. "Herb" Theilen, 88, of Chatham, passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Heritage Healthcare in Springfield.

Herb was born at home in rural Maxwell Township, near Loami, IL on July 27, 1926, the son of William S. and Elsie (Wallner) Theilen. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod on March 17, 1940. He married Esther Kochman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Springfield on Feb. 14, 1954.

His parents, and three sisters, Elma Binetsch, Norma Nowak and Carolyn Leady, all preceded him in death.

He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and two Overseas Bars.

Herb was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Berlin, IL for many years where he served on various boards and committees including the Board of Christian Education and served as a trustee. He was a member of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau.

Herb was a lifelong farmer in the Chatham area. He also served as road commissioner for Curran Township from 1971-1977.

Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Esther; his children: John , Cynthia, Donna and Glenn. He has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Loren , as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Army.
