German World War II Lieutenant General. Born in Lenkeningken, East Prussia (now Lesnoje, Russian Federation), he became a officer candidate in 1904 and was promoted to Lieutenant in the West Prussian Foot Artillery Regiment No. 11. In 1910 he was sent to artillery school. In World War I, he served with the Garde Foot Artillery Regiment No. 2 as adjutant and battery chief for three years, being promoted to Captain in 1915. He then joined the General Staff in 1917. He continued to serve after the war in the new Reichswehr and was promoted to Major, but was released from service in December 1920 due to the reduction in force mandated by the Versailles Treaty. He then joined the Police and was promoted to Colonel of Police by 1935. When the Reichswehr became the Wehrmacht in late 1935, he was again called to service. In January 1938, he took command of Artillery Regiment 30 and was promoted to Major General in June. At the start of World War II, he was commander of the Artillery Command 31, where he fought in the Battle of Poland and the Battle of France. On July 1, 1940, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and shortly thereafter took command of Artillery Command 124, which he led into battle in Operation Barbarossa, the attack on the Soviet Union. He was killed in action in the attack on Moscow.
