~ Valentine began leaving his mark on Toledo when he entered the business world in 1836, opening a general merchandise store. He was very successful and Joseph K. Secor joined him in business 10 years later under the business name 'Ketcham & Secor'. The business continued to thrive so in 1851 Valentine withdrew from the business to focus on the banking industry. Two years later John Berdan (Valentine's brother-in-law) & S.S. Hubbard joined him and formed the business name 'Ketcham, Berdan, & Company'. The bank did extremely well under Valentine's control and in 1863, the bank became The First National Bank of Toledo. At Valentine's death 24 years later, he had been the bank's only President. His children succeeded him in the banking industry after his passing.
