Polar Explorer. Along with explorer Salomon August Andree and photographer Nils Strindberg, he made an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon. The three men left the Island of Danskoya on the north west end of the Svalbard archipelago in the arctic circle on July 11, 1897. Although several messages were sent by carrier pigeons, the three men were never heard from again. It is believed the three men's balloon crashed after only three days in the air, and together they survived the crash, and continued on foot until they reached White Island, where they all perished at the end of October 1897. In August 1930, almost 33 years after the explorers disappeared there remains and personal belongings were found by a Norwegian whaling party. Included in the find was personal journals, and over 240 pictures, that were taken by Strindberg. Only 93 were able to be saved. The three explorers were cremated and buried together.
