David Allen Hernes was born on July 3, 1949 in Deadwood and passed away after a brave battle against cancer at Ft. Meade Veterans Hospital Hospice Unit on December 31, 2014.

He was born to Betty Hall and lovingly adopted by Eino and Helen Hernes. He danced to the beat of his own drum – and a helluva dancer at that! A verbose storyteller, he LOVED people, he was a talented photographer, adventure seeker, philosopher, avid book reader, sports fanatic, armchair meteorologist, question-answerer for his two daughters, and had a thirst for understanding everything from humans to combines. Did we mention he loved Saloon #10?! Although he was taken from us much too soon, he always drank deep from the cup of life.

He told everyone and anyone that would listen that his greatest joy was his daughters, Alina, and Reeta (and wife Jessica), all of California. His pearls of wisdom will forever be with us. We will miss going to the Dickens Faire, Grand National Rodeo, road trips to Timbuktu and his papa bear protection over his girls.

His fresh pair of angel wings will look smashing on his biker vest in God's country.

The biography above was written by me, Alina (aka Squeak), and my younger sister, Reeta. We sat at the funeral home and wrote it ourselves. We figured we were the only ones who would truly be able to write in a way that, if someone reading dad's bio didn't know him, they would see what kind of man he was.

He was also a US Army Veteran and fought in the Vietnam War and I feel HORRIBLE that we forgot to mention that particular fact in his obituary! We were very proud of this fact, but just forgot in the blurriness of it all.

He was part of the 201st Aviation Company Red Barons Air Support in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If anyone out there knew him during these times, PLEASE don't hesitate the contact me! I would LOVE to hear from you! Plus I have lots and lots and lots of photos he took in those places, maybe you're in them!

Baptized as David Allen Hernes at St. Patrick's Church, 141 Siever Street, Lead, SD 57754 by Rev. Bernard E. Shanley on 1/14/1951. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Blotz (parents of Helen Hernes).

Burial of Ashes with military honors was on April 22nd, 2023. A flat military headstone has been applied for and will hopefully be granted and put at the base of his biological mother's stone - they are now in the same plot.
