US Congressman, Governor of West Virginia. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of West Virginia's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1957 until 1969. He served as the 28th and 30th Governor of the State of West Virginia (from 1969 until 1977 and 1985 until 1989) and had the distinction of having the longest tenure at that capacity. He served as a combat sergeant with the United States Army during World War II and was the recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon his return home, he earned his law degree from West Virginia University and commenced practicing in his family's firm. He entered the political arena as a member of the West Virginia State House of Representatives. During his tenure in Congress, he will be remembered as a strong Civil Rights supporter who worked with the Johnson Administration to pass the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. As governor, he established the Department of Highways and The Board of Regents to run state colleges and universities. His daughter, Shelley Moore Capito became a United States Senator from West Virginia. Moore died of complications from dementia and heart related issues.
