During World War II, Mr. Tubbs was a paratrooper at the D-Day invasion of Normandy as a squad leader of B Company, 507 regiment of the 82nd Airborne. He was also a combatant with the 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge, where he was injured on the battlefield Jan. 8, 1945. He was a recipient of both a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Following World War II, he attended Auburn University where he obtained a Masters in Chemical Engineering. He was part of the Saturn V development team at Redstone Arsenal (now Marshall Space Center) in Huntsville, Ala.

He moved to Panama City, Fla., in 1961 where he was a science and math teacher at Everett Junior High. He also taught science and math at Marianna and Bonifay high schools. He moved to Cedartown, Ga., in 1999.

Mr. Tubbs was preceded in death by his wife of six years, Gladys; his parents James Samuel and Minnie Lee Tubbs of Jasper, Ala., his son, Douglas; and two brothers, Edsel Tubbs, and Charles "Red" Tubbs.
