United States Army Brevet Brigadier General. In 1899, he founded the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He commanded the 1st Colorado Infantry Volunteers during the Spanish-American War. He was awarded the Silver Star and brevetted Brigadier General on August 13 1898 for "distinguished gallantry in action." After founding the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he served as commander of VFW Post #1 in Denver and designed the Cross of Malta emblem currently used by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Camp Hale, a former U.S. Army facility near Leadville, Colorado was constructed in 1942 for what became the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division and provided an excellent environment for cold weather and high altitude training. On October 12, 2022, President Joe Biden designated Camp Hale and a noncontiguous nearby part of the Tenmile Range as Camp Hale - Continental Divide National Monument. It comprises 53,804 acres (84 sq mi; 218 km2), which will be managed by the White River National Forest unit of the U.S. Forest Service.
