Herbert Fuerst, age 94, died on January 14, 2015 in Raleigh at Rex Hospital.

He was a retired dentist and orthodontist who lived most of his life in Rocky Mount.

He was born on February 20, 1920 in Manhattan, New York to the late Alex and Lillie Fuerst.

He attended undergraduate and dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1944. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army, serving honorably during World War II. He met his wife, Lila Dale Rosenbloom Fuerst, when his troop train stopped in Rocky Mount.

He held two patents – one for a vibrating toothbrush and a second for wheeled luggage. After retiring, he continued to be active, framing artwork and collecting eighteenth and nineteenth century prints and opening Sunset Art Gallery.

Later, he and his wife opened a bed and breakfast in their home in Rocky Mount. He and his wife were married from 1948 until her death in 2005.

He is survived by his three children and daughters-in-law, Robert Fuerst and his wife, Claudia, of Raleigh, Sarah Fuerst of Raleigh, and Sam Fuerst and his wife, Kathy, of Durham, as well as by his grandchildren and their spouses, Shanah Fuerst Black and Jamie Black of Raleigh, Rachel Fuerst and Kepler Knott of Raleigh, Leah Fuerst Gajdos and Peter Gajdos of San Francisco, California, Rebekah Fuerst of Charlotte, Josh Sokol of Boston, Massachusetts, Alix Fuerst and Ariel Fuerst of Durham, and his five great grandchildren, David and Adam Gajdos, Sylvie and Madeleine Knott and Robert Black.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Pineview Cemetery, 761 N. Raleigh Street, Rocky Mount, N.C. 27801.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh or the Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount.
