Professional Basketball Player, Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He won a gold medal as a member of the Men's United States Olympic Basketball Squad in 1948. Born Raymond George Lumpp, he attended Newtown High School in Elmhurst, New York, prior to serving with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Following his return home, he enrolled with New York University and played collegiate basketball. While with the Violets, Lumpp and Dolph Schayes led the school to an appearance in the NIT Championship Game in 1948. Later that year, Lumpp was selected to play on the US Olympic Basketball Team which captured the gold medal at the Summer Games in London. Chosen by the Indianapolis Jets of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), he was acquired by the New York Knicks midway through his rookie season (1948-1949). He contributed to New York's reaching of the NBA Finals in 1951 and 1952, prior to concluding his career with the Baltimore Bullets in 1953. He totaled five seasons (1948 to 1953), at the point guard and shooting guard positions in the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball Association. He compiled 2,462 points in 300 regular season games. After retiring from basketball, he served as the athletic director of New York Athletic Club for 47-years.
