Inventor, Television Director, Producer. He will be best remembered for devising television's instant replay which revolutionized the coverage of sporting events. The Philadelphia native began his career as a TV director for the local station WCAU-TV. The concept of instant replay was initiated by Verna during the annual broadcast of the Army-Navy Game played on December 7, 1963. Among his other achievements include his producing and directing of the Pope John Paul II TV special "A Prayer for World Peace" and the "Live Aid" music concert in 1985. He died of complications from leukemia.
